A Practical System to Transform the Process of Strategy Formulation so That You Can Invent New and Sustainable Business
Let’s face it, the essence of business strategy is to allow a company to create and exploit a unique strategic position in its market.
The catch-22 is that superior strategies come from clear and specific options based on the answers to three knotty questions: Who should we target as customers? What products or services should we offer them? How should we do this in a productive and advantageous way?
The objective of strategy
Build a strategy, based on selected customer groups with a clear need, a strong position based on differentiating capabilities to create a robust and sustainable proposition of real value to customers and a company will create and colonise a unique strategic position in its industry!
And, if you don’t come up with ideas that differentiate the business from its competitors any effort to stake out a unique and sustainable strategic position will be hard to pin down.
No strategy will remain uniqueBut despite these challenges, even the best of strategies have an incomplete life. Uncompromising competitors not only emulate attractive positions, they produce new ones to challenge the attractiveness of the propositions of the day.
So it really isn’t enough to build a unique strategic position or liven up the existing one. You have to continually create and occupy new strategic positions, a major problem, but not an unattainable task, for many established companies.
How a company can invent new positions
UBS shows how creative thinking leads to strategic innovation and the “breakthroughs” that separate the winning strategists from “me-too” players.
Using stimulating and refreshingly different methods, UBS can show the business strategist how to identify fresh positions, examine the important business issues and through trial and error turn a new initiative into an actionable reality.
This is a far more fruitful approach than purely mustering and analysing data in a systematic way – a process advocated by many training establishments, consultancies and business schools.
The ideas behind this perspective on strategy go back a long way and have evolved over the years. They are based on research and through working with managers and business owners in a variety of companies, as well as hands on experience at the helm of business strategy and development, working with the creativity and innovation taking place in the market place!
