Channel Express, a logistics provider in a declining market, undertook a management and business strategy review to find the means to improve market position and revenue.

The review that was undertaken demonstrated that the Company could transfer its strengths to the UK produce market.

A key issue was the need to develop competences in produce distribution with the utmost speed to avoid emerging barriers to entry. Organic growth would have been too slow and so acquisition was suggested.

Research determined the acquisition target, resources and actions, which lead to the acquisition (of Fowler Welch).

Channel Express trading as Fowler Welch acquired Cool Chain and went on to become a major player in produce logistics raising its turnover from £20 million to £65 million within four years for a small initial investment. (See table A and B below)
